According to the Maritime Industry Foundation’s Maritime Knowledge Center:
“There are approximately 1.2 million people currently employed at sea in the maritime industry! This doesn’t take into account all of the employees working in related maritime jobs on shore, such as those in the Navy or those working at docks. The maritime industry is booming, and it is still much less expensive that travel or transport by plane. The MIKC also reports that 90% of the world’s trade is done by ship. How’s that for an “old fashioned” industry? The maritime world is not dead.”
Working in the maritime industry is not an easy job, it is risky and can be dangerous. Workers will be away from their families and on the sea for weeks, and often months at a time. Health is a major issue, quality of food and medicines available are a priority. At Global, we have seen the evolution in the demand for better quality foods, as this in the long-term results in less sickness and lower costs for any vessel.
People working in the maritime industry have a lot of vacation time, much higher than any other industry, averaging two weeks a month. This is an opportunity for many of our brands, as these workers get used to their high quality products, they keep consuming when back at home and introducing their families to the products as well.
